Carolyn Anspacher was a journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, working as a member of its staff from 1933 until 1979. Her great-grandfather, Samuel Hirshberg, was an early Oakland Jewish settler, and her grandfather, David Hirshberg, was president of Temple Sinai and active in the community affairs of Oakland's Jewish community.
